A Mom's Job Description

Wednesday, May 02, 2007

"To be Queen Elizabeth within a definite area, deciding sales, banquets, labors, and holidays; to be Whitely within a certain area, providing toys, boots, cakes, and books; to be Aristotle within a certain area, teaching morals, manners, theology, and hygiene; I can understand how this might exhaust the mind, but I cannot imagine how it could narrow it. How can it be a large career to tell other people's children about the Rule of Three, and a small career to tell one's own children about the universe? How can it be broad to be the same thing to everyone and narrow to be everything to someone? No, a woman's function is laborious, but because it is gigantic, not because it is minute." - G.K. Chesterton, What's Wrong With the World

  1. There was a Yahoo! news story this morning that said a stay at home mom salary is equivalent to $183,000 (USD) per year.

    Here is the story.

  2. That is a lovely quote and so true. I feel horrible when women say they are 'just housewives' - if they don't appreciate the bg job they are doing, they are just setting themselves up to be doormats, aren't they?

  3. Heather Anne - That's awesome! If only that translated to actual dollars in my bank account! :-)

Rohini - I totally agree. I never say I'm "just a stay-at-home mom." Besides that fact that it is not true, since I have several ways of making income from home, it is demeaning. When people ask me what I do, I answer like this: "Well, I'm a stay-at-home mom to three little boys under 4." After the raised eyebrows and the "so, you're busy" comments fade away, I add that I also teach piano and have an eBay business. But those things are secondary to my primary job of raising my family.

I wish more moms saw it that way. (I know you do--you work away from home, but Ayaan is obviously your primary concern.)
